New "Super 8" teaser poster

Huge thanks to Screenrave we now have the teaser poster for upcoming sci-fi "Super 8"! The movie will be released worldwide in June 10, 2011. Check the poster out below:

The J.J. Abrams directed movie is produced by the one and only Steven Spielberg, and starring Elle Fanning, Kyle Chandler, Noah Emmerich, and Gabriel Basso. For those who haven't seen it, check out the super awesome trailer!

Jennifer Lawrence is one step closer to seal "The Hunger Games" deal as Katniss Everdeen

After announcing the names who tried out for Katniss Everdeen role, seems like Lionsgate finally found the front-runner. Jennifer Lawrence, who actually has been in talks to take over the role, is reportedly just a step closer to sign in for this project, according to Deadline.

If all of this is true, then the 20 years old actress who was nominated for Oscar this year will play 16 years old Katniss Everdeen, the main heroine of "The Hunger Games", which the movie version will be released in March 23, 2012 with Gary Ross and Billy Ray as the director and script writer respectively. Katniss volunteers to participate in an annual televised championship in which she has to fight over 23 teenagers from 12 districts in futuristic North America. Her twelve years old sister, Prim, is actually the one chosen to fight, but to protect her family she is willing to do so. At the competition, she meets and falls in love with Peeta Mellark, a boy whom she furtherly have an adventure with.

The studio is currently also looking for a young actor to play the role Peeta, and that Alex Pettyfer has been officially approached to star. There's still no confirmation from both Pettyfer and Lionsgate about this, but knowing that the shooting will begin shortly in a couple of months, I'm sure we all expect an official announcement soon. Keep checking back to this blog for more info!

"The Mirror Never Lies": promoting the beauty of Wakatobi and Bajo culture

One more high quality Indonesian feature that will likely appear in April, "The Mirror Never Lies" or "Laut Bercermin". Helmed by a very young director Kamila Andini, daughter of senior director Garin Nugroho, this movie won't just put on a meaningful story, but also promoting the Indonesian tourism. Filmed and set in Wakatobi, "The Mirror Never Lies" will bring you numerous beautiful scenaries of this location, while introducing the in-depth real life of Bajo people, indigenous community in Wakatobi. Moreover, this movie is also made to raise people's awareness of environmental issues.

"The Mirror Never Lies" tells a story about Pakis (Gita Novarita), a twelve-year-old girl whose father is missing while he's sailing. Her father used to tell her stories before he goes sailing, but after one night he actually never comes back. Overly frustrated by this, Pakis isn't able to sleep until now. With only a mirror which her father gave her, she keeps looking for his reflection that never be seen. She believes that through a traditional ritual that involves a mirror and water, the mirror never lies. Pakis' mother (Atiqah Hasiholan), the nowly 32 years old single parent, tries to keep her daughter stays in reality but instead kills Pakis' hopes and dreams to find her father. Pakis' mother keeps on denying about the fact that her husband won't come back, and with desperation she finally covers her face with a thick powder.

There's a light of hope when a 28 years old researcher named Tudo (Reza Rahadian) comes to their lives. Tudo comes to the Bajou village for a dolphin research. His fiancee left him one day before the wedding, and coming to Wakatobi is also his 'runaway plan' from reality. He finds that the sound of dolphin reflects his true self, someone who never understands what a woman wants, but still searching for the right woman for him. Tudo's presence enlighten Pakis and her mother's hope, but it also causes another problem: a love triangle. Pakis sees Tudo as her 'first love', while Pakis' mother feels she finally finds her lost love after all this time. Even so, Tudo is still looking for the answer of what love is. Three of them finally learn many of lessons beneath the beautiful sea.

Aren't you all excited for this movie?! I absolutely am! Wakatobi is one of the most beautiful places in the world, I'm telling you. Choosing Wakatobi and its culture as the setting of this movie is simply a brilliant idea. The audience will not just enjoy the drama of the story, but also cultural knowledge. Wakatobi is an archipelago located in South Eastern Sulawesi, Indonesia, and is also the home of Operation Wallacea, a UK non profit research group about sustainable development of fisheries and coral reef. Its indigenous tribe, Bajo, is often called as the 'sea gypsie', for they always living nomadically, and they build their houses above the sea, literally.

"The Mirror Never Lies" is a debut movie for Kamila Andini, the 23 years old director. She said she's been interested in oceanic themed features. She worked with WWF Indonesia (World Wildlife Fund) and local government of Wakatobi for this movie, for they are also supporting Andini's idea to promote natural and environmental issues. Her father, Garin Nugroho, also supported her as a producer, as well as Nadine Chandrawinata, the coral reef ambassador from Indonesia. Dirmawan Hatta, who previously nominated as Best Script Writer at Festival Film Indonesia (FFI - Indonesian Film Festival) 2008 and the writer of "King", writes the screenplay. Last year's FFI Best Actor winner Reza Rahadian takes the leading part along with Atiqah Hasiholan, daughter of Indonesian artist and women activist Ratna Sarumpaet.

Below is the teaser trailer of "The Mirror Never Lies":

The release date of this movie is still unknown. However, I asked Nadine Chandrawinata about it and she said it will be still released in April. Stay tune for more updates of this movie!

Luke Evans is "The Amateur American"

British actor Luke Evans is announced to star in "The Amateur American", an action thriller written and directed by Ross Katz. Evans will protray a young American living in Paris who accepts a job working for a 'shadowy employer' and soon finds himself framed for murder and caught up in a web of deceit.

Evans might be relatively unknown for most of us. Well, let me introduce him for you. Luke Evans is a 32 years old British actor who appeared in Sex & Drugs & Rock n Roll, along with Andy Serkis (yeah, that Andy Serkis, the Gollum!). He also landed a small role in "Clash of the Titans" as Apollo, one of the Twelve Olympians. His first leading role might be as Andy Cobb in "Tamara Drewe" alongside Gemma Arterton. But in 2011, his career starts to rise, as he landed a major role in "The Raven" as Detective Emmett Fields. He also stars in the remake of "The Three Musketeers" with Logan Lerman, Milla Jovovich, Christoph Waltz, and Orlando Bloom. Another movie with Evans this year is "Immortals" in which he plays Zeus, along with the newly chosen Superman Henry Cavill and "Twilight" star Kellan Lutz.

Neill Blomkamp brings alien back to the earth in his upcoming project "Elysium"

Following the success of epic science fiction "District 9" which was a gore-but-compelling feature, Neill Blomkamp, the genius behind the movie, is officially signed in for another alien sci-fi flick "Elysium". The award winning director has been appointed by Sony Pictures to 'handle' this mankind vs aliens kind of movie.

However, this movie is still in pre-production so I can't give you any further information. One thing for sure, the leading actors for "Elysium" will likely be 'star-studded'. Matt Damon has officially signed for the lead role, while Sharlto Copley, will reunite with Blomkamp in this movie as he landed the main actor for "District 9" before. Recently, Brazilian actor Wagner Moura also signed in, who is set to play a "powerful villain who has crazy sense of humor". Jodie Foster is being approached to star in this movie as well.

"Elysium" will come to theatres in March 8, 2013 as Sony Pictures announced. I don't know about Blomkamp's personal fascination to alien/sci-fi movie ideas, but looking back at "District 9", I'm just so optimistic about this movie. Blomkamp is a great director/writer, he could bring a 'heart' upon the blazing special effects and action. Hopefully he will receive more recognitions from his amazing works!

The Chemical Brothers' "The Devil is in the Beats" is "Hanna" official soundtrack

New York Magazine's Vulture has premiered The Chemical Brothers track, "The Devil Is In The Beats", which will be the original song of upcoming action "Hanna". Listen to it below:

The Devil Is In The Beats by The Chemical Brothers by Hannamovie

"Hanna" (played by Oscar nominated young actress Saoirse Ronan) is a story about a teenage girl whose strength, stamina, and intelligence are fairly compared to soldiers. She was raised this way by her father Erik Heller (Eric Bana), who was a former CIA member, to make her one of the greatest teenage assassin. Erik sends Hanna on a mission across Europe, but then she is being followed by an agent from a ruthless intelligence operative led by Marissa Wiegler (Cate Blanchett). As Hanna gets closer to her ultimate target, she finally finds out a revelation about her own 'existence'.

The Focus Features movie also stars Olivia Williams, Tom Hollander, and Jessica Bardain, and directed by "Atonement" and "Pride and Prejudice" talented helmer, Joe Wright. "Hanna" is to be released in April 8, 2011 for USA region, April 14 in Malaysia, and July 21 in Singapore. For those who haven't seen the trailer, see it below:

First on set photos of "Underworld: New Dawn"

Thanks to Coming Soon we have the first look of "Underworld: New Dawn" on set photos! Kate Beckinsale is returning to portray vampire Selene with a new adventure in which she finds out that her lost daughter is a vampire/lycan hybrid. They have to fight the evil plans of a bio-tech company named Antigen, which develops a 'super lycan' project to kill vampires.

Check out the photos below (please note that the woman is Kate Beckinsale's stunt):

"Underworld: New Dawn" is the fourth movie of "Underworld" series, which starts in 2003. The franchise has grossed $ 298 million worldwide, and was a decent commercial success even though the critics didn't fancy it that much (well to be honest I kinda like "Underworld: Rise of the Lycans", it's like Romeo & Juliet with vampire and werewolf background, with tragic ending as well). "New Dawn" will come to theatres in January 20, 2012.

Trentz Reznor won't score nor star in "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter"

After setting the record straight through the Nine Inch Nails' official forum, it is clear that Trent Reznor is not going to star nor score for "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter". Below is Reznor's statement taken verbatim from the message boards:

"Don't believe everything you read. As it turns out, I WON'T be working on (acting or scoring) ALVH after all. There's no juicy story here, it's just that when the news mysteriously leaked out about my involvement I hadn't made up my mind completely, because various aspects of the project were changing. I felt the need to say something earlier this week because my inbox was filling up with speculation, and at that moment I thought I would be doing it. Confused yet? Apparently I am.

Bottom line, I wish them the best with the film and I'm sure it will still be great. Also, in all the excitement of the last note I forgot to mention we're still fully engaged with the Year Zero mini-series, writing away."

The Academy Award winning composer was falsely announced to join the Timur Bekmambetov directed movie, which will be released in June 22, 2012. Bekmambetov did amazing in 2008's action flick "Wanted" which stars James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie, and I even enjoyed his rather absurd vampire series "Night Watch" and "Day Watch". It means that I literally will watch "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter"!

In another note, seems like Reznor is still attached to score for David Fincher's upcoming page-to-screen adaptation "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo", starring Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig.

J.J. Abram's "Super 8" gets official synopsis and full trailer!

After only releasing a TV spot in this year's Super Bowl (even we have no idea of the characters name on its IMDb page!), Paramount Pictures finally unveiled the full synopsis and trailer of upcoming sci-fi flick "Super 8", which we all have been waiting for! Here's the detailed synopsis:

In the summer of 1979, a group of friends in a small Ohio town witness a catastrophic train crash while making a super 8 movie and soon suspect that it was not an accident. Shortly after, unusual disappearances and inexplicable events begin to take place in town, and the local Deputy tries to uncover the truth - something more terrifying than any of them could have imagined.

And then "Super 8"'s official twitter just tweeted the link of its first official full trailer. It looks AWESOME. Check it out below:

Anyone is excited for this movie like I am? Well, I really hope the MPA will pay the taxes way before June so I (and other Indonesian movie mania) will be able to watch this soon-to-be epic movie! Catch the J.J. Abrams' directed and written-movie "Super 8" in theatres on June 10, 2011, starring Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Amanda Michalka, Noah Emmerich, and Gabriel Basso.

My first article about Indonesian feature: the upcoming "?" by Hanung Bramantyo

Finally! I managed to write an article about an Indonesian movie! I was pretty confused to pick which title to write. But then I surfed the web and found this thread in Kaskus forum about upcoming drama movie directed by Indonesia's acclaimed Hanung Bramantyo, titled "?" or simply, 'untitled'. Read on the article to see the movie posters and trailer!

This movie tells about three different Indonesian families. First, family of Tan Kat Sun (Henky Solaiman), a father and owner of a successful Chinese food restaurant. But he is irritated by his son, Ping Hen's (Rio Dewanto) attitude, who seems careless to the family. Ping Hen falls in love with Menuk (Revalina S. Temat), a beautiful woman from a Moslem family, who works in his father's restaurant. Unfortunately Menuk already made her choice, by marrying Soleh (Reza Rahadian), who's actually an unemployement and less fortunate than Ping Hen, but shares the same belief with her, Islam.

The third family is Rika's (Endhita), a widow with a child who starts a relationship with a single man named Surya (Agus Kuncoro) after divorcing with her then husband. Surya works as an actor and is a Moslem, while Rika opens a book store and was formerly Moslem but converted to Catholic after her divorce. Their religion difference not just causes a stir between their neighbors, but also inside Rika's family as well. But Rika sticks with her decision and tries to prove that she makes the right choices.

From the short description above, this movie depicts the reality of Indonesian culture and living. Religion difference has been a problem for married/dating couples. Indonesia isn't a secular country, and that's how the people live as well, so Indonesians (including me) always referring to their beliefs as their way of life. We can't get rid of that, it's not a simple matter. And I think this movie wants to carry out this question: why can't we put aside this fundamental difference and live our relationship with one simple base; love?

Reboot movies roundup: "The Wolfman" is in preparation & Josh Zetummer to write "RoboCop"

Seems like the reboot trend won't fade anytime soon. I'm sure any of us haven't forgotten the 2010 Academy Award winning thriller "The Wolfman", have we? The movie received mixed critics and not quite well box office performance. With an enormous $ 150 million budget, it roughly only grossed $ 61 million in US alone, and $ 77 million worldwide. Rolling Stones' Peter Travers called it "No fun either. And no real scares, which is more unforgivable.". But apparently Universal Pictures wants to 'make that up', by planning yet another "The Wolfman" reboot, which will be released direct-to-DVD.

The critics agreed that the 2010 remake of "The Wolfman" was somewhat victorious in special effects and makeup, but "suffers from a suspense-deficient script". It's pretty surprising though, because Andrew Kevin Walker, the genius behind 1995's crime hit "Se7en", was the one who wrote the screenplay. Another thing to be sorry about was the lack of chills and thrills. To most movie mania and critics, it wasn't as good as the original 1941 "The Wolf Man" movie starring Lon Chaney, Jr. and directed by George Waggner. I just read that "Never Let Me Go" and "One Hour Photo" director Mark Romanek was originally appointed to direct "The Wolfman", but eventually it went to Joe Johnston, director of sci-fi comedy "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" and the upcoming "Captain America: The First Avenger".

Another news from the 'reboot universe', the 1987 action sci-fi "RoboCop" will officially be remade again. MGM has acquired the popular franchise, and already signed Brazilian director Jose Padilha to helm this project. Variety just reported that Josh Zetumer has been chosen to write the story and screenplay for this reboot. Zetumer is currently working for the pre-scripted "The Bourne Legacy", in which it's still looking for the leading man to replace Matt Damon.

This confirms that the franchise is actually returning after almost 20 years of 'vacuum', even though no further news about the development is released. "RoboCop" reboot will be also helmed by producers of masterpieces such as "Black Swan", "Shutter Island", and "Zodiac"; Mike Medavoy, Arnold Messer, Brad Fischer, and David Thwaites. No release date has set, but it will come to theatres in 2013.

"The Smurfs" trailer hits online

Sony Pictures finally releases the trailer for one of this year's 3D features, "The Smurfs". Check out the trailer below:

"The Smurfs" is starring "How I Met Your Mother" leading man Neil Patrick Harris and "Glee" actress Jayma Mays as Patrick and Grace Winslow respectively, while Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, Alan Cumming, George Lopez, Paul Reubens all voiced members of Smurfs. Catch them on August 3, 2011 in 3D!
