"The Last Airbender" named Worst Movie and the big winner at the Razzie's Golden Raspberry Awards

Very cool special effects won't guarantee your movie to be cool either. This should be a huge lesson for any Hollywood directors, because we the audience won't be easily fooled by it. Even if we just wanted to watch a movie with simplified plot it doesn't mean that they can underestimate the other technical details. Shallow person like me actually pay attention to the dialogue details (screenplay) and scene continuity and relevance (apart of me being an OCD-er).

Take a look at 2009's big blockbuster-but-big whoop "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen". This movie was no doubt full of AMAZING special effects — those robot fights were fantastic. But unfortunately employing good actors like Shia LaBeouf, John Turturro, Josh Duhamel, and Tyrese Gibson (no I won't include Megan Fox in this — she's the worst part of the movie) wouldn't turn out to be good without a good script.

The movie ran for 2 hours with those spectacular effects but very weak storyline and dialogue. It grossed more than $800 million at the box office, but that won't do any good if the critics flunked it (for the record, The Rolling Stones gave the movie an 'F' grade — big FAIL!). As the result, this movie wasn't included as Best nor Most Favorite Movies that year at all (even the shallowest achievement like MTV Movie Awards* missed it), instead it won big at the Razzie's Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst Picture. Michael Bay finally explained that the writer's strike affected the production, as they had to choose the script in the last minute without actually revised or corrected it. He made a promise that the third installment, "Transformers: Dark of the Moon", will be much better.

This case of "Revenge of the Fallen" apparently repeated last year. The whole world rejoiced after M. Night Shyamalan announced he was working on the movie version of Nickelodeon's favorite cartoon show "Avatar: The Legend of Aang". I personally love this cartoon so much, it has a meaningful story to told in each episode, and I expected the movie version will be even more epic than it. But, well, apparently high expectation does make a heartbreak. The movie was a complete failure.

Storyline? Bleh. Acting? Bleh. Casting? Bleh. Screenplay? Bleh. Special effects? Thumbs up! But then again, special effects won't prove anything. It's reeeally bad that M. Night made it like this, because I knew he could do better! At one point I even doubted him for watching the original show — where's the joyful and silly Aang (Noah Ringer)? He changed Aang into someone serious and rather 'desperate'. I loved to know that Dev Patel was on the movie, but isn't Prince Zuko should be 'oriental'? Same thing goes to Sokka (Jackson Rathbone) and Katara (Nicola Peltz), they are supposed to be tan.

Succeeding "Revenge of the Fallen", this movie was voted as the Worst Picture at this year's Razzie. "The Last Airbender" 'beat' its 'highest' worst contenders, "Sex and the City 2" and "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse". Not only the Worst Picture, it also got Worst Screenplay, Worst Eye-Gouging Miss-use of 3D, and Worst Director for M. Night Shyamalan.

Meanwhile, "Sex and the City 2" took home Worst Ensemble Cast, Worst Sequel, and Worst Actress (for all four of them!). The "Twilight" fans should be thankful that apparently their movie wasn't the only worst on this planet, even though Jackson Rathbone, who played Jasper Cullen, got the Worst Supporting Actor (but I think it was based on his performance in "Last Airbender").

To be honest I thought "Vampires Suck" would be the biggest winner, because the movie was really really really suck. I mean if I had to choose between "Vampires Suck" and "The Last Airbender", I'd go with the latter because I'm still a fan of the original cartoon and Dev Patel was in it. "Vampires Suck" ranked only 4% in Rotten Tomatoes, while "Last Airbender" was slightly better in 7%. But the decisions have been made so I can't do anything.

If we normally congratulate the winner of an award, for this one I only can say, 'Sorry to hear that'.

*: Why do I think MTV Movie Award is shallow? Well, looking at the previous couple of years winner: how come "Twilight" beat "The Dark Knight" as the BEST MOVIE? How come "New Moon" beat "Avatar" and "Alice in Wonderland" as the BEST MOVIE? If "Eclipse" will win over "The Social Network" or "Inception" this year, I don't think I will watch MTV Movie Awards anymore, unless my idols are nominated and attending the show. Period.

Here comes the Razzie Awards nominations!

Finally! The ultimate anti-Oscar 'appreciation', Razzie Awards, has announced its nominations for worst of the worst movies last year. And as most people have predicted, "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse" and "Vampires Suck" dominate the entire worst nominations. "The Last Airbender", "Jonah Hex", and "Sex and the City 2" are also on it. Here are the complete nominations and my own predictions on who's going to be called the worst.
