A week ago there was a speculation that Jon M. Chu will take over to direct "G.I. Joe 2" from Stephen Sommers. Apparently the news has been finally confirmed, but Paramount Pictures is still negotiating with Chu.
Now the studio announced that "G.I. Joe 2" will be released in August 10, 2012 to join competing with other exciting summer movies next year, "The Dark Knight Rises", "The Avengers", and "The Amazing Spider-Man". Channing Tatum will likely return for the lead role, Duke, with Byung-Hung Lee as Storm Shadow and Ray Park as Snake Eyes. Unfortunately Joseph Gordon-Levitt who played The Doctor in "G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra", as well as Sienna Miller who played Baroness and Rachel Nichols who played Shana O'Hara won't be returning for the sequel.
Levitt was currently announced to join "The Dark Knight Rises" in which he's going to reunite with "Inception" director Christopher Nolan, even though his role hasn't been confirmed yet. So this probably the reason why he won't be returning to "G.I. Joe 2". Paramount will likely have to hold an actor replacement search as soon as possible before it starts filming.
